Do I need to purify my water in the Metro Vancouver area?

Certainly. Some Vancouver residents are of the belief that the Vancouver tap water is, as an exception, safe to drink. While it may be true that the tap water in Greater Vancouver is higher in purity that some other parts of North America, it would be a dangerous overstatement to say that it is pure enough to be drinkable. Chlorine, for instance, exists in high numbers in Vancouver’s water. Disinfectant by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THMs), also contribute greatly to the contamination of Vancouver tap water. These volatile gases are known to cause cell damage, and ultimately, cancer. Vancouver water is not immune from other conventional contaminants such as fluoride, nitrites, and arsenic either. Above all, even if we assume that the city's treatment plant completely purifies input water, what about city pipelines? Some Metro Vancouver pipelines are over 50 years old, making heavy metal contamination (eg. lead) a severe problem.

 

Therefore, the best way to guarantee safe water is to produce it in your own home. A point-of-use AQUAVITA® water purification system is the most economical way to have unlimited amounts of pure, chemical free water at your fingertips.

Do I need minerals in my drinking water?

To begin, what are minerals? Minerals are inorganic substances, like rocks, found in the earth strata, as opposed to organic substances such as plant and animal matter. Some familiar minerals are what we think of as "good minerals" – things like calcium, magnesium and potassium. There are also “not so good” minerals – at least as far as the human body is concerned – things like lead, arsenic, antimony, aluminum, barium, etc.

There is considerable debate in the scientific community as to the usefulness of these inorganic minerals in the human diet. You can obtain calcium from rocks mined from the earth or it can be obtained from dairy products, fruits and vegetables. That’s calcium from an organic source. The body can absorb nutrients (like calcium) from organic sources very well. On the other hand, it is much less efficient to obtain your nutrients from inorganic sources because the body can’t absorb them as well. For instance, milk, cheese and oranges get processed very quickly, whereas a pill containing the same materials may take much longer to process.

So, back to the issue of minerals in your water. Do you really need them? From the above information, you could conclude that the inorganic minerals sometimes found in water (both tap water and spring water) aren’t very useful to the body. But another question is how much of those minerals are even in the water? Not very much with respect to what the body needs. For example, let’s take a famous spring water from the French alps – it has around 35 milligrams per liter of calcium in it. The minimum recommended daily allowance for an average person is 1,000 milligrams per day. If the inorganic calcium from your spring water were able to be processed 100% efficiently by the human body (which it cannot), it would take 28.57 liters of water to get your minimum daily allowance of calcium. You could easily get this daily value from an organic source like milk, even if your drinking water contained no calcium at all. This goes for all other minerals and nutrients as well.

That is only half of the answer, because not every mineral in water in good for you. In fact, the majority of minerals found in tap water are harmful. Since there is no way to remove harmful contaminants while keeping the nutritious ones intact, we must purify them altogether. By doing this though, nothing is being lost, given that the harmful contaminants greatly outnumber the beneficial ones.

Should I be worried about lead in my tap water?

There are several different ways lead can get into the water supply. The most important thing to understand is that when water leaves the treatment plant, it does not have lead in it. Once it travels through the pipes to get to your home/office is when it may appear. It may be from a lead connector pipe that connects your home pipe to the city pipe or from lead solder used in older copper plumbing. Lead can even leach into the water supply from older brass faucets and fixtures, because lead used to be used in the manufacturing process for producing brass.

Lead in tap water is such a large health problem that it cannot be stressed enough how important it is that you NEVER drink water that you suspect has lead in it. Lead and many other heavier metals do not readily leave the body. Once you ingest it, it remains in the body forever. What is the RO membrane?

A semipermeable membrane is a type of biological membrane that will allow certain molecules or ions to pass through it by diffusion and occasionally specialized "facilitated diffusion", along with other types of passive transport and active transport.

The rate of passage depends on the pressure, concentration, and temperature of the molecules or solutes on either side, as well as the permeability of the membrane to each solute. Depending on the membrane and the solute, permeability may depend on solute size, solubility, and properties. How the membrane is constructed to be selective in its permeability will determine the rate and the permeability.

The diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane is called osmosis. This allows only certain particles to go through including water and leaving behind the solutes including salt and other contaminants.

In the process of reverse osmosis, thin film composite membranes (TFC or TFM) are used. These are semipermeable membranes manufactured principally for use in water purification systems. They are also used in chemical applications such as batteries and fuel cells. In essence, a TFC material is a molecular sieve constructed in the form of a film from two or more layered materials.

Membranes used in reverse osmosis are, in general, made out of polyamide, chosen primarily for its permeability to water and relative impermeability to various dissolved impurities including salt ions and other small molecules that cannot be filtered.

What contaminants does Reverse Osmosis remove?

Are the quality of all Reverse Osmosis water systems the same?

Not at all. The quality of the water that comes out of a Reverse Osmosis system is dependent on the quality of the filters and components. Just because a product has a label reading ‘Reverse Osmosis’ on it, does not automatically make its output water safe. Reverse Osmosis water purification systems must be approved by international associations such as The National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) and The Water Quality Association.

Can I get a maintenance contract when I buy AQUAVITA® water systems?

Yes, optional maintenance contracts are available with our entire line of products.

Can I buy extra filter supplies for my water system?

Extra filters are always available if you would like to purchase them in advance. However, we provide an automatic filter change reminder for our customers.

What is the warranty and technical support for AQUAVITA™ water systems?

AQUAVITA® products are protected against any form of manufacturer defect or malfunction by a one-year limited AQUAVITA®. Warranty terms and conditions are enclosed with each product. Signing a maintenance contract will extend the warranty for as long as monthly dues continue to be paid.

Do you ship water systems anywhere in CANADA and the USA?

Yes. We will ship systems anywhere across the United States and Canada.

How do I get my water system installed if you do not have a certified installer in my city?

All systems come with a complete installation and instruction manual along with the necessary qualifications of an installer. We will also provide any extra information required via phone/email to ensure your installation, quality control, and verification is completed properly.

Can AQUAVITA® water systems be connected to my fridge?

Of course. Our systems create enough pressure to feed water to your fridge so that you can access premium AQUAVITA® water and crystallized ice cubes directly from your refrigerator.

Can AQUAVITA® water systems be connected to my water dispenser?

Yes. They can be connected to your water dispenser, eliminating the need to purchase and carry heavy water jugs altogether.

What is the filter change and maintenance schedule for AQUAVITA® water systems?

Typically, filter changes occur once a year. Please confirm the exact filter change schedule of your water system with your AQUAVITA® representative.
